Peer Mentors

My name is Philip Kaishin Kawada, and I am an undergraduate computer science student at UCR. I am from the East Bay. I graduated from Castro Valley High School in 2015. Then, I got an Associates in Science in Computer Science in 2017 from Ohlone College. I plan on graduating this spring, 2019.

At Ohlone College I co-founded the first Computer Science Club on campus and competed on the intercollegiate soccer team. The club is currently the only computer science club on campus. Since its founding it has worked on a few club wide projects, go on tours of local companies such as Twitter, and hosted a movie screening to promote minorities in STEM. I continue to work on an advisory board, and currently they are working on hosting their own Hackathon.

At UCR I have continued playing organized sports and work to grow professionally. I decided to become a peer mentor because I had a positive experience with mine. Also, I believe I have done a good job adjusting to life at UCR academically and socially. I have succeeded in the classroom, and built my resume finding an on campus job at the Academic Personnel Office maintaining their website and validating files, major related work. I think I am very approachable and I hope that will help me to share my positive experience and perspective with more students who would like to follow a similar path.
