Program's Mission

Interested in a great summer program? Check out the TUNE Summer Bridge to Research Program!

The TUNE Summer Bridge to Research Program removes barriers to transfer by familiarizing students and faculty with the life at UCR.

The goal of this program is to encourage students to explore research opportunities and to discover more about the engineering field.

About the Program

The research program is a paid ten-week, full-time research experience for 20 first-time incoming community college transfer students to BCOE. These students will receive a $5,000 stipend at the end of the ten weeks, given they have full-filled the time and research requirements. The program is supported by the Training from Undergraduate through Navy Engagement (TUNE) Grant from the Office of Naval Research, aimed at supporting underrepresented student populations in the engineering field. The TUNE Summer Bridge to Research Program requires a full-time commitment from each student for its entire duration. Participants are expected to work up to 40 hours/week in active research. Students will also be participating in a research symposium with an oral presentation and research abstract.

I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in the program. It really broadened my view as to what I could apply myself to and what types of work are available once I graduate. I learned important technical skills, gained professional experience, and made valuable connections that gave me a leg up on my resume and job applications. Thanks to my research experience, I am closer than ever to getting an internship for this upcoming summer.

The Summer Bridge to Research was an incredible experience. I was a great way to get my feet wet in the world of research. I was assigned to Dr. Amit Roy-Chowdhury's VIdeo Computing Group where I got to learn about machine learning and neural networks by creating an algorithm to train a computer how to read handwritten digits. It was a great way to find out that machine learning was not for me and to gain more experience with Matlab and Python. I still use the skills I learned to this day whether for class or personal projects. The program also gave us opportunities to visit companies and raised my interest in robotics and how to be a more competitive candidate when applying. This program gave my knowledge which I could not have gained from a classroom setting and an environment to form meaningful connections between representatives from companies, my lab group, and my peers.

Summer 2019 was one for the books. Since declaring as an engineering major, I anxiously waited for the time I would apply scientific principles to engineering problems. Textbook examples bored me-I wanted a hands-on experience. Through TUNE’s Summer Bridge to Research program, what I was looking for found me. Because of TUNE & TTP, I received unfretted access to a professional laboratory where I was assigned a project meant to contribute to the advancement of science. The individuals I worked alongside held advanced degrees, nonetheless, they treated me equally. Though there were moments I was beyond frustrated, the experience was absolutely worth it.

With the help of TUNE and TPP, I learned about, how to conduct, and If I enjoyed research. I developed professionally and personally-building networking skills whilst forming friendships with other transfer students interested in research. Before registration day, I learned about the campus and its resources. Via conversations with co-workers, I gained insight on points to consider before pursuing an advanced degree; imbibing differences in expectations between my community college and UCR.

Aside from the many advantages, an important benefit was getting paid well for work I found both interesting and enjoyable. Moreover, as was the case in the community, I did not start my journey alone. Because of TUNE and TPP, I had friends whom I could count on when things got tough. As transfer students, we have all struggled to get to this point. Knowing that you’re not alone in the struggle can be the difference between dropping out and persevering.
